Tiny House - A hand-crafted space of wood, light and openness

Process:
This Tiny House has been created over several years as a personal design and construction project. As a trained carpenter, I have long been engaged with sustainable architecture, design and the quiet interaction between space and people. The house was completely planned and built by myself - from the first sketch to the final detail, every decision was made consciously.

The Idea:
For this project, it was important to me to create movement within the interior space so that the eye does not see everything at first glance. The two main volumes are offset from one another. This creates a sense of spaciousness and different spatial qualities across the 30 m² of living area.

Another central element of the design is the winter garden. It creates a room-within-a-room feeling, brings plenty of light into the interior and simultaneously enables a sheltered privacy. As an extended exterior space, it can merge with the interior through the large oak-framed folding doors. This creates fluid transitions between the living area, winter garden and surroundings.

The sleeping area with a raised bed and integrated drawers is separated by a double-sided accessible storage element and creates a sheltered niche with interesting visual connections.

The Materials:
To create a healthy indoor climate, I decided on consistent timber construction. The ecological wood wool insulation and natural surfaces create a warm and cozy atmosphere. The choice of materials follows the desire for naturalness and durability. Swiss oak, birch plywood, Scots pine and natural furniture linoleum combine to create a calm and timeless interior.

The kitchen is an interplay of these materials: A shelf made of pigmented concrete is framed by a fine brass border and complemented by fronts of natural furniture linoleum. The sliding window behind the kitchen serves as ventilation and a pass-through to the winter garden.

Technology & Construction:
The Tiny House lives from individually crafted details that make the house something unique. It is constructed in two modules and can be relocated independently of one another. The house is heated by a storage stove from the Lausanne brand Tonwerk, which provides pleasantly distributed warmth during the colder months.

New Residents:
I lived in the house myself on a trial basis. It brought me much peace and showed me how strongly spaces can influence our wellbeing. It is now carefully refreshed and ready for new residents.

Viewings & Contact:
The Tiny House can gladly be viewed in Bern by arrangement.
